About SERA

SERA – Labour’s Environment Campaign – is the environmental affiliate of the Labour Party, working from within the party to put climate and nature at the heart of Labour politics. For over 50 years, we’ve shaped policy, supported emerging green leaders, and helped Labour win with a bold, fair and deliverable vision for climate action and environmental justice.

Through our national network, expert membership and deep grassroots connections, we champion ambitious ideas and hold power to account—ensuring Labour leads with credibility and ambition on the biggest challenges facing people and planet.

About the Role

We’re looking for a Research and Politics Officer (RPO) to lead on SERA’s research projects, policy development, and parliamentary engagement.

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with strong political instincts, sharp research skills, and a passion for environmental justice—someone who wants to influence the Labour movement and help shape the future of environmental policy in Britain.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Lead Research & Policy Development
  • Lead SERA’s research projects, including policy analysis and voter insight, to strengthen the case for Labour-led environmental policy and delivery.
  • Develop toolkits and resources to help Labour candidates and activists campaign effectively on environmental issues.
  • Work closely with the Engagement and Campaigns Officer to translate research findings into compelling campaign materials.
  • Monitor and analyse government and Labour Party policy developments, providing briefings and insights for internal and external audiences.
  1. Drive Political & Parliamentary Engagement
  • Strengthen SERA’s engagement with MPs, councillors, and political stakeholders, ensuring the organisation remains at the heart of Labour’s environmental agenda.
  • Act as SERA’s Parliamentary Officer, supporting Labour’s green champions in Parliament and helping them advocate for ambitious environmental policies.
  • Draft policy briefings, parliamentary questions, and speeches to support Labour MPs and councillors in championing SERA’s priorities.
  • Build relationships with trade unions, NGOs, and Labour-affiliated groups to strengthen SERA’s political influence.
  1. Support Organisational Development & Fundraising
  • Support SERA’s fundraising strategy, particularly in securing grants and donations for research projects.
  • Contribute to the delivery of SERA’s Annual Conference and wider events programme.

Person Specification

  • Commitment to SERA’s mission and a strong understanding of Labour politics and environmental policy.
  • Experience conducting research, policy analysis, or political strategy work.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to write clear, concise, and persuasive briefings and reports.
  • Strong political judgement, with experience engaging with MPs, policymakers, or party structures.
  • Ability to translate complex research into accessible materials for campaigners and policymakers.
  • Experience working in a political, research, think tank, or parliamentary setting.

Desirable

  • Experience working within the Labour movement or with affiliated organisations.
  • Fundraising experience, particularly in securing grants or donations for research projects.
